Surabaya Golf
With a choice of some 6 delightful golf courses, it's also golfer's paradise.
Of late, Surabaya, as a golf destination, in popularity has grown tremendously and mainly because of its pleasant pricing policy for "play & stay" and a combined effort of promotion and marketing of the Surabaya golf courses in for instance the Jakarta region, and most recently (August 2001) at one of Australia's important travel fairs. With Bali, refusing to come down on their US dollar denominated prices for golf (in order to offer affordable golf to Indonesian citizens and expatriates, and in doing so finding an alternative for the deteriorating influx of foreign tourism) Surabaya cleverly has taken over Bali's position as Indonesia's second most important golf destination.
With Yani Golf, Bukit Darmo, Ciputra Golf (27 holes), Golf Graha Famili, Finna Golf and Taman Dayu (the latter two outside of the city), Surabaya offers 6 great courses.
More "Indonesian" than Jakarta in the pace of life and in appearance, through its architecture, Surabaya reminds the visitor of the "olden days". When in Surabaya you have to check out historic Hotel Majapahit, formerly known as the Oranje Hotel and the birthplace of Indonesia's independence. The city, as well as its immediate surroundings, offer great possibilities for "après golf" like shopping, wining & dining and touristy trips. Mount Bromo, world famous for its spectacular sunrise and the isle of Madura, known for the annual Kerapan Sapi (bull race) are examples of these points of interest. Malang, certainly is one of the most attractive cities to visit as it is the most popular mountain retreat for Surabayans and only located some 90 km outside of the city. Malang also is known for its cool climate and for the many, often completely restored, Dutch-style houses and clean streets.
